About The Valhalla

The Valhalla - Donaustauf | Secret World Trip Planner

The first impression is wrong: what you see in a photo is not the wonderful Parthenon temple on the Acropolis in Athens, but Valhalla above the banks of the Danube at Regensburg. The similarities are striking and quite intentional: Architect Leo von Klenze was inspired by the ancient model when building this monument and set a truly impressive marble structure in the landscape with the Valhalla: 125 meters long, 55 meters high.

The Valhalla - Donaustauf | Secret World Trip Planner

It was commissioned by King Ludwig I. The temple, which was opened in 1842, does not honor gods, but some of the most famous Germans, from Albrecht Dürer to Sophie Scholl. They are represented in the form of marble busts and memorial plaques. Strikingly, of the 131 busts and 65 commemorative plaques in the collection, only 13 exhibits are dedicated to women. But that may yet change. Recommendation on our part: Go up the 479 steps to Valhalla before the sun goes to rest: We mere mortals can hardly imagine a more sublime sunset.

Frequently Asked Questions

There are 479 steps leading up to the Valhalla monument. The climb is worth the effort, especially if you arrive before sunset when you can experience one of the most sublime views from the top of this impressive structure.
King Ludwig I commissioned the Valhalla, which was opened in 1842. Architect Leo von Klenze designed this neoclassical temple inspired by the Parthenon in Athens, creating a 125-meter-long and 55-meter-high marble monument on the banks of the Danube.
Rather than honoring gods like the Parthenon, Valhalla celebrates famous Germans including figures like Albrecht Dürer and Sophie Scholl. The monument features 131 marble busts and 65 commemorative plaques dedicated to notable German historical figures.
The best time to visit is before sunset, when the lighting creates a truly sublime experience from the top of the monument. This timing allows you to enjoy the landscape along the Danube at its most beautiful and photograph the temple's impressive marble structure in golden hour light.
Currently, only 13 of the 131 busts and 65 commemorative plaques are dedicated to women, showing a significant gender imbalance in the collection. However, this representation may yet change as modern perspectives on historical recognition continue to evolve.
