About Ghost Forest Nienhagen

Ghost Forest Nienhagen - Nienhagen | Secret World Trip Planner

The "Ghost Forest" is a popular destination for nature lovers. It was declared a nature reserve in 1943. With a width of about 100 meters and a length of about 1,300 meters, it is part of the Nienhäger Holz forest area. Locals say the forest is "where the wind mows the grass," as the grasses bent by the sea breeze appear to be all the same length.

Ghost Forest Nienhagen - Nienhagen | Secret World Trip Planner

The oaks, beeches, hornbeams and ash trees are 90 to 170 years old. They are relatively far apart. Little or no shrubbery grows between them - plenty of room for light and shade. For decades, the salty, damp Baltic Sea wind and the many storms have shaped the appearance of the forest. The crowns and trunks that seem to flee from the wind are also called "wind fleeing".

The unusual and sometimes bizarre shapes of the trees create a mystical atmosphere, especially at dusk, when it is foggy and windy, and inevitably stimulate the imagination of visitors. Ghosts, spirits and mythical creatures seem to breathe life into the branches and twigs in a wondrous way.

The ghost forest is really special. You have to experience the atmosphere when you cycle through it. A beautiful piece of nature with a great view of the sea!

Frequently Asked Questions

The forest earned its ghostly name because of the bizarre and contorted shapes of its trees, which are dramatically shaped by decades of powerful Baltic Sea winds and storms. These unusual tree forms, combined with the mystical atmosphere created by fog and wind—especially at dusk—evoke the imagination of visitors who see ghosts, spirits, and mythical creatures in the twisted branches and twigs.
While the forest is worth visiting year-round, the most atmospheric experience comes during dusk when it's foggy and windy, as this is when the mystical qualities truly come alive. However, if you prefer a more comfortable visit for cycling through the forest, warmer months with clearer weather offer better conditions to appreciate the unique landscape and sea views.
The oaks, beeches, hornbeams, and ash trees in the Ghost Forest range between 90 to 170 years old, giving them considerable age and character. Their relatively sparse spacing throughout the forest creates plenty of room for light and shadow, contributing to the unique atmospheric quality of this nature reserve.
"Wind fleeing" refers to the distinctive phenomenon where tree crowns and trunks appear to lean and bend away from the direction of the sea breeze, as if literally trying to escape the wind. This visual effect is shaped by decades of exposure to salty, damp Baltic Sea winds and frequent storms that have molded the trees into these unusual, almost fleeing postures.
The Ghost Forest spans approximately 1,300 meters in length and 100 meters in width, making it part of the larger Nienhäger Holz forest area. Cycling through the forest is highly recommended to fully experience its mystical atmosphere, as it offers a unique perspective of the wind-shaped trees and provides beautiful views of the sea.
