About Villa Sommi Picenardi Crotti

Villa Sommi Picenardi Crotti - San Lorenzo De' Picenardi | Secret World Trip Planner

The villa-a name that fits it better than that of "castle" usually attributed to it-is located to the south of the built-up area, near the lower Padana state road. It is one of the last examples, in a chronological sense, of a castellated residence; in fact, it was erected in the 19th century on the site of a pre-existing castle, perhaps from the 14th century, of which it incorporated some surviving elements. The design is by architect Voghera, also the author of the not far away Manfredi "castle" in Cicognolo. It cannot be ruled out that the free nineteenth-century romantic reinterpretation of castle forms, so dear to Voghera and so strongly imprinting the architecture of this villa, also stemmed from the skilful use of the only two pre-existing elements of the vanished castle: the entrance tower of the latter, placed in frieze of the still existing moat, and a second tower, located in the center of the present noble court of the complex.

Frequently Asked Questions

The villa was designed by architect Voghera in the 19th century, built on the site of a pre-existing castle that likely dated back to the 14th century. Voghera also designed the similar Manfredi 'castle' in nearby Cicognolo, and was known for his romantic reinterpretation of medieval castle forms.
The villa is located south of the built-up area near the lower Padana state road. Its proximity to this major road makes it relatively accessible for visitors traveling through the Padana region.
Two surviving elements from the original 14th-century castle remain: an entrance tower positioned along the still-existing moat in a frieze-like arrangement, and a second tower located in the center of the villa's noble courtyard. These pre-existing structures were skillfully incorporated into Voghera's 19th-century design.
It is more accurately described as a villa rather than a castle, despite being commonly called the latter. The villa represents one of the last examples of a castellated residence, blending romantic 19th-century interpretations of castle architecture with practical residential design.
The villa is significant as one of the final chronological examples of a castellated residence, showcasing architect Voghera's distinctive romantic reinterpretation of medieval forms combined with surviving original elements. Its design represents an important transition between historical defensive architecture and 19th-century residential aesthetics.
