About The National Arms Museum

The National Arms Museum - Gjirokastër | Secret World Trip Planner

The National Museum of Arms is housed inside the castle: the weapons on display there belong to ancient times. The castle of Argirocastro dominates the town and dominates the important strategic road along the river valley. It is open to visitors and contains a military museum with artillery and relics from the era of communist resistance against the German occupation, as well as an American Air Force aircraft on display to commemorate the struggle of the communist regime against the imperialist powers.

The castle was enlarged during the 19th and 20th centuries by Ali Pasha of Tepeleni and during the government of King Zog. Today it has five towers, a clock tower, a church, water fountains, stables and many other services. The northern area of the castle was turned into a prison by Zog's government and housed political prisoners during the communist regime.
