The Cholistan Desert, locally known as Rohi, lies just 30 km (19 mi) from Bahawalpur in Punjab, Pakistan, and stretches across a vast area of 26,300 km² (10,200 sq mi). It seamlessly extends into the Thar Desert, reaching across to Sindh and even into India, creating a massive expanse of arid land.
Derived from the Turkic word 'chol', which means desert, the name Cholistan reflects the harsh, dry nature of the region. The people of Cholistan lead a semi-nomadic lifestyle, a resilient community that moves across the desert landscape in search of water and fodder for their livestock. This way of life has been a tradition for generations, enabling them to thrive in such a challenging environment.
One of the significant historical aspects of Cholistan is the dry bed of the Hakra River, which meanders through the desert. Along its course, numerous settlements dating back to the Indus Valley Civilization have been unearthed, providing crucial insights into early human settlement and culture in the region.
Adding a contemporary twist to its ancient landscapes, Cholistan is also the venue for the Cholistan Desert Jeep Rally, the largest motor sports event in Pakistan.
