The Egg of Columbus is a bronze sculpture located in the town of Sant Antoni de Portmany on the island of Ibiza. This artwork was created by Balearic artist Tomás de Mesa and was unveiled in 2004 to celebrate the 500th anniversary of Christopher Columbus' departure for the New World. The sculpture represents a bronze egg resting on a stone base, with a map of the Americas engraved on the surface of the egg. The artwork is about 2.5 meters high and has become one of the most photographed attractions in Sant Antoni. The name of the artwork, "The Egg of Columbus," refers to a famous legend about how Columbus challenged a group of Spanish nobles who claimed that discovering America had been easy, telling them to stand an egg on a flat surface. After they had all failed, Columbus took the egg, pressed it lightly on one side to make it stand upright, and told them, "It's easy, you just have to know how to do it."Columbus' Egg has become a symbol of ingenuity and creativity, and the sculpture is a tribute to Columbus' boldness and determination. The artwork is centrally located in the town of Sant Antoni, in a pedestrian area, and is easily accessible by foot or bicycle.
