The town of Argirocastro (Albanian for Gjirokastër) is situated on the slope of a mountain and is known for its characteristic narrow cobbled streets. The houses have the shape of medieval towers assembled in a sort of building complex. The city castle of Gjirokastër rises like a balcony over the city and allows visitors to enjoy a very beautiful and characteristic landscape. The birthplace of Enver Hoxha, Gjirokastër (Gjirokastër) was, like Berat, preserved by the communist dictator, who made it what he called " a museum town ": it was supposed to embody Albanian history and past, while the other towns were supposed to represent the future and progress.Gjirokastër is a town divided in two: the lower part of the town is the newer and more residential part, completely outside from any tour. Above this stands the village, which lies at the beginning of the ascent of one of the surrounding mountains. You won't need maps or GPS to orient yourself in the city: the division between new and old town is so clear and evident that you only need to look up to get to the historical area. The old town is particularly well preserved and every corner hides a spectacular view: from the stone roofs of the oldest houses (which give Argirocastro the name of "Silver Town" because after the summer downpours shine while they dry in the sun) to the creepers that invade the ruins of the now abandoned houses.
